The news comes after months of speculation regarding the Princess’ whereabouts.

In a two-minute video message posted on X on March 22, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer and has started undergoing preventative chemotherapy treatment.

Kate unintentionally caused waves of speculation after undergoing abdominal surgery in London in January. For months after her unnamed operation, Princess Catherine had noticeably disappeared from view, a decision that launched a rush of concern from the public and an eventual scandal when manipulated photos of the princess were released

In her video announcement of her condition, Kate finally shed light on why she’d gone quiet. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family,” she said, speaking from a sunlit bench. “But I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.”

Princess Catherine laid out the timeline of her illness as she announced more details: “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London. And at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous.”

“The surgery was successful,” she clarified. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.” The princess didn’t confirm what type of cancer she’s been diagnosed with.

The Princess of Wales explains that she and Prince William have sought privacy “for the sake of our young family” — not only has she had to recover from her surgery, but she’s also been taking the time to comfort her three young children.

“It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK.”

“As I’ve said to them, I am well,” she continued. “And getting stronger every day.”

“We hope that you’ll understand that as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment,” Kate said. She was previously committed to making a public appearance at Easter but has reportedly canceled that appointment in light of this news.

“I’m also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer,” Kate said, finishing her statement. ”For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.” This sentiment likely hits close to home, given that her father-in-law, King Charles, was also diagnosed with cancer this year
