About a year after being diagnosed with cancer, Catherine, Princess of Wales, shared some good news: She is in remission. The happy update came amid the princess’s first solo engagement of the year when she visited the Royal Marsden Hospital in London — where she received her treatment — to thank the medical staff who helped her and meet with patients. A Kensington Palace spokesperson told CNN, “The princess wanted to make the journey to both show her gratitude to the incredible team, but also highlight the world leading care and treatment the Marsden provides.”
This comes a few months after the princess revealed she had completed chemotherapy back in September.
Kate Middleton cancer remission announcement
In an Instagram post uploaded on Tuesday, the princess thanked the Royal Marsden Hospital: “The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional,” she wrote.
The princess also confirmed she is in remission, writing, “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery.” She added, “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal” before thanking the public for their support.
During her surprise hospital visit, the princess opened up about the impact of cancer treatment, remarking that completing daily tasks can be “a real challenge.” It also takes an emotional toll: “The resilience you need to get through, first of all, a small taster of what you’ve gone through…It’s to keep coming back…to be as positive as you are. The treatments are really so different and so varied, it impacts families differently,” she told a patient, according to Daily Mail.
She also recognized how difficult dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be for loved ones and caretakers. “They need support just as much as I did as the patient,” she said.
In her Instagram post, the princess also announced that she’ll be undertaking a new role: Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden, where she’ll be “supporting groundbreaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing” alongside Prince William.
What kind of cancer did Kate Middleton have?
The Palace has never confirmed what type of cancer Kate Middleton was battling. In her video last year revealing her cancer diagnosis, the princess said that she’d undergone “major abdominal surgery” in January 2024. “At the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” she said, but unfortunately, “tests after the operation found cancer had been present.” From there, she underwent preventative chemotherapy, and she finished her treatment in September 2024.
Aside from this information, the Palace said back in early 2024 that it would not divulge further details about the princess’s condition. “The Princess has a right to medical privacy as we all do,” the Palace said in a statement.
