After what feels like an eternity of winter, we couldn’t be more excited to bring our sandals and light sneakers out of hibernation. Our spring and summer travel plans are finally coming into focus, so we’re dreaming of a new pair (or two) of kicks to pack away for our next trip.

Vacation footwear can be drastically different from the standby shoes you wear at home, thanks to the myriad specific needs they have to address: They should keep you comfortable for the 20K steps you take while wandering through city streets, durable enough for a mountain hike, cute enough to wear while lounging by the beach, or even versatile enough to handle more than one task. (And if you’re like Katie, you may want to pack away a pair of sneakers for morning pickleball workouts, too.) Those who only travel with a carry-on know how precious luggage space is, so they need to choose their shoes extra wisely.

We went on the hunt and found footwear that checks off multiple boxes, and found stylish flats with sufficient arch support and sandals that won’t give you blisters no matter how far you stroll down the beach. These shoes will keep your feet happy for days of sightseeing, guided tours, and sunbathing (with SPF, naturally). Trust us, they’re worth the spot in your suitcase.

Clarks Cloudsteppers Backstrap Sandals

QVC

Just as the name implies, these squishy sandals feel like walking on clouds. Reviewers say they’re lightweight and easy to travel with, and they don’t skimp on support. They have a slight wedge heel, in case you’re looking to add a little height, and they’re currently on sale for only $35.

Quince Italian Leather On-The-Go Ballet Flat

Quince Italian Leather On-The-Go Ballet Flat

Quince

Does it get more luxurious than Italian leather flats? These have built-in OrthoLite foam insoles to keep your dogs from barking, and come in three different neutral colors, to match anything you pack. They’re super lightweight, making them ultra travel-friendly. You can even toss them into your day bag, then throw them on for a fancy dinner (in case you don’t have time to rush back to your hotel).

Franco Sarto L-tavana Mule

Franco Sarto L-tavana Mule

Zappos

The love child of a mule and a fisherman sandal, these chic slip-ons are begging to be worn in Tuscany while you sip an Aperol spritz. They can handle cobblestone streets like a more-rugged shoe, but the teeny heel adds some fanciness. One reviewer says that because the vamp comes up higher than on other mules, their feet are held securely in place and don’t slip out while walking.

Archies Arch Support Flip Flops

Archies

Flip-flops aren’t exactly known for their arch support—but Archies is out to change that. With a molded footbed that offers serious support, these sandals are comfortable enough for long strolls to the pool, the beach, or wherever your sunny adventures take you. Jennifer Aniston is such a fan, she owns them in three different colors.

Vionic Walk Max Sandals

Chunky sandals are here to stay — and this podiatrist-approved pair deserves a standing ovation. They nail the trend and take care of your feet. Designed to promote proper spinal alignment and posture, the sole helps reduce pain and boost stability, while a deep heel cup offers support and a flexible midsole allows for natural movement. Bonus: The adjustable ankle and toe straps give you a custom fit without the custom orthotics price tag.

Beek Fernbird Sandals

Beek

Chic, minimalist sandals with built-in arch support? Sign us up! Soft leather surrounds a molded memory-foam sole, and the padded straps keep your feet in place without any uncomfortable pinching. For every pair sold, Beek donates the equivalent of three meals to the Second Harvest Food Bank, to help reduce child hunger. (Since 2014, the brand has donated the equivalent of over one million meals.)

We have two words for you: Washable. Shoes. When these flats get mucky post-vacay, you can toss them straight into the washer and they’ll come out looking good as new. Not only that, but they’re made from recycled plastic bottles, making them a sustainable option you won’t feel guilty about indulging in.

Leather sneakers are great — until the temperature climbs. To keep sweaty toes at bay, this pair pairs suede trim with breathable mesh uppers that let your feet catch a breeze as you walk. Elastic laces mean you can slip them on and off with ease (no tying required), and reviewers recommend sizing up a half size for the most comfortable fit.

Dr. Scholl’s

Affordable and comfortable shoes can be hard to come by — but Dr. Scholl’s delivers. These faux-leather sandals feature a contoured footbed that molds to your feet over time, and a flexible outsole that moves with you, not against you. Available in silver, blue, black, and brown — and at just $45 a pair — they’re tempting in every color.

Katie loves her wedge espadrilles, but if you’re looking for something closer to the ground, try a pair with a sneaker-like rubber sole. The suede upper and adjustable ankle ties are soft and blister-free — even after a full day of walking. One reviewer swore she wore them straight out of the box during a long travel day, with zero discomfort.

NuuSol Cascade Flip Flops

Flip-flops aren’t known as the most fashionable shoe, but sometimes you have to prioritize function over fashion. Made from a cushy and responsive foam, these sandals cradle your feet with each step, even if you’re walking on uneven sand or cobblestones. Because they’re made from foam, these are also 100-percent waterproof, and they float in the water should you lose one while boating on a lake. The cherry on top? They’re made right here in the U.S.
