What you should be doing — and products you should be staying away from

In a new series, Katie’s stylist Dana Fiore of Hair House, is answering all your burning questions about hair. Next up? She’s discussing how to take care of wavy hair. “Wavy hair right now is all the rage,” she told us. “It’s the undone/done look of the moment.”

Think of this as a beginner’s guide that debunks any misconceptions you’ve made in caring for your hair. (P.S. Take 20% off Hair House’s products with the code Katie20.) Without further ado…

1. What type of shampoo and conditioner do you recommend?

Similar to curly and straight shampooing techniques, it all depends on your hair moisture and dryness levels. The dryer the hair, the less often you have to shampoo. Scalp only! Condition as needed. If you have oily hair, skip the scalp. If you have dry hair, you should put conditioner all over.

2. What products/techniques do you recommend for styling?

For a more finished ‘beach wave’ look, a Hot Tools 1 1/2 inch curling iron does the trick. I bend the hair around the iron and ‘pull’ down as I make my way to the tips of the hair, alternating between wrapping and pulling on each section.

3. What’s the best way to style wavy hair naturally?

If you want to maintain your wavy look, products go on wet hair. Mousses or beach sprays help support the style you want. I like to finish a wavy style with Oribe Dry Texture Spray. It takes beach hair to a whole other level!
