Speculation that the Only Murders in the Building costars are more than friends has been growing for months.
Rumors have been swirling about a new Hollywood “it” couple. She’s considered one of the greatest actors of our generation; he’s a mega-talented multi-hyphenate. Between the two of them, they’re just a Grammy away from an EGOT — and they’re co-starring in one of the biggest shows streaming today.
You guessed it, social media has “shipped” Meryl Streep and Martin Short. And the speculation only intensified after the two were seen seated next to each other at the Golden Globes. (Both actors were nominated, Streep for a record 33rd time.) But Short has put an end to the romance rumors: A rep for the Only Murders in the Building star confirmed to The Messenger that the pair “are just very good friends, nothing more.”
After news broke in October that Streep, 74, had been separated from her ex-husband Don Gummer for six years, fans began to wonder if the Academy Award winner could be romantically involved with her co-star. The Mamma Mia! star was married to Gummer for 45 years and the pair have four children together. A rep for Streep, 74, told PEOPLE in October that “while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”
Short, 73, also appears to be single. He lost his wife, actor Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer in 2010. Short opened up to AARP about his relationship, calling his marriage “a triumph.” And in his 2014 memoir, I Must Say, Short wrote that he’s “still very much married to Nancy.”

Still, if you were pulling for this artistic power couple, we don’t blame you: They are quite convincing onstage. In season three of OMITB, Streep plays Loretta Durkin, a struggling actor, while Short plays theater producer Oliver Putnam, who fall for each other in the most lovely way. The Academy Award-winner, who’s had her fair share of onscreen trysts, was so moved by her role on the Hulu hit that she reportedly thanked its showrunner for writing her romance with Short.
“It’s pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep and Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that,” showrunner John Hoffman told The Wrap. “It’s just a beautiful romance that you buy, I think because of who these two characters are.”
Even if they’re not dating IRL, we’ve got our fingers crossed that we’ll get to see more of Streep and Short’s love story in season four.
