Plus, what we know about the rumors that their exes are dating.
Former Good Morning America anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes caused quite a stir last year when tabloids caught them holding hands. Soon after their romance made news, ABC took them off the air, but now, they’re finally opening up about the much-talked-about ordeal.
In the debut episode of Amy and T.J., the couple detailed what it was like to go through the fallout after their relationship was made public. “I guess the best way to sum us up, Amy and T.J., is that we’re the folks who lost the jobs we love because we love each other,” Holmes said on the podcast Tuesday. “And that is the bottom line.
What makes this story even juicier is that, according to unnamed sources, Holmes and Robach’s exes are now in a relationship.
As we await confirmation of that rumor, here’s what we do know and what Holmes and Robach had to say about their relationship and why they decided to address it after all of this time.
Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes spoke about their GMA exit on the podcast
Holmes and Robach were the co-anchors of GMA3, the afternoon spinoff of the ABC morning show Good Morning America, and their on-screen chemistry translated off-screen. In December 2022, the Daily Mail published a video and photographs of the two anchors, who were allegedly separated from their respective spouses by this time, holding hands and Holmes patting Robach on the bottom.
Shortly after they made headlines, ABC sidelined Robach and Holmes from the afternoon news program, calling their alleged affair allegations a “distraction.” On their self-titled podcast, Robach recalled each of them receiving a phone call from their bosses, saying that even though they hadn’t violated any company policy, they thought the couple should be taken off the air because they were generating too much unwanted attention.
“That was the morning we knew we would not be going back to that network,” Holmes added. “We knew that phone call sealed it because you can’t come back from that.”
And it turns out, their gut feeling was right — a month later, they were officially ousted from their positions and replaced by network correspondents Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan. Following the scandal, Robach said the duo have since “gone through a year of hell” but by breaking their silence, they hope to take back the narrative. “In the end, all of us are always rooting for love,” she said. “It doesn’t always happen when you want it to happen. And it’s undeniable when it’s real and it’s something you have to navigate and it’s not easy.”
Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes open up about their relationship
On their podcast, the pair denied that they were having an affair in the first place, citing that they were both going through divorces at the time they were photographed together on a trip in upstate New York. This was a detail they said many outlets didn’t focus on and the tabloid sighting of them is what ultimately led to their fallout.
“To be clear, we were outed as being in a relationship,” Holmes said during the Dec. 5 premiere of their podcast. “But everyone else thought we were being outed as adulterous, being outed as cheating on our spouses, and that wasn’t the case. Because the odd thing is that the day those pictures were taken and the day that article was released, we had both, at that point, been in divorce proceedings.”
Before the tabloid forced their hands, Holmes and Robach said that they had planned to first finalize their divorces before telling ABC management and the public. They weren’t given that chance, and the media subsequently painted them as “adulterers.” (For the record, the pair were legally married at the time — Robach didn’t finalize her divorce with Melrose Place actor Andrew Shue until March 2022 and Holmes settled his with attorney Marilee Fiebig in October.)
“Right before the pictures came out, we thought, should we tell them what’s going on? And we thought, let’s just get these divorces cleaned up, and then let’s do it. But we had every intention of doing it and we didn’t believe, and I don’t think we still do believe, we were doing anything technically wrong,” Robach recalled.
However, some insiders shared a very different account with Page Six, insisting that Holmes and Robach had an affair and it became factor for the pair’s respective divorces, “no matter how they try to spin it.” For instance, one anonymous source said that Fiebig found a birthday card addressed to Holmes as “my love.”
Are T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach’s exes dating, too?
In a surprising turn of events, an unnamed source told Page Six that their exes, Shue and Fiebig, have been dating for about six months. The pair bonded over the traumatic experience of their very public break-ups. “They’re not heartbroken and sad,” the person said. “Everyone has moved on.”
Shue and Fiebig have known each other for years, mostly through their former spouses. Robach previously told PEOPLE that the four had “gone on tons of double dates” and that her children would babysit Holmes and Fiebig’s daughters.
People on Twitter were quick to pick up on the news and draw comparisons to country star Shania Twain. As Twain fans pointed out, her ex-husband Robert “Mutt” Lange allegedly had an affair with Twain’s friend at the time, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. After divorcing Lange, the country singer dated and eventually married Thiébaud’s ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, in 2011 after the pair bonded over the messy end of their marriages. “I got what I deserve,” Twain told host Dax Shepard on his podcast, Armchair Expert. “I got the greatest man on the planet.”
Fiebig and Shue have yet to comment on the rumors.
