The stars were out in full force on Monday night for the fashion industry’s version of the Super Bowl, aka the Met Gala.
The annual event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is always the most glamorous and surreal red carpet of the year, and the 2025 edition was no exception. The fashionistas on hand were dressed to the nines in celebration of this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” — and, as always, that theme connects back to the newest exhibit from the museum’s Costume Institute, which will be on view from May 10 to Oct. 26, 2025.
“The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style over 300 years through the concept of dandyism,” the museum’s website explains. “In the 18th-century Atlantic world, a new culture of consumption, fueled by the slave trade, colonialism, and imperialism, enabled access to clothing and goods that indicated wealth, distinction, and taste. Black dandyism sprung from the intersection of African and European style traditions.”
The theme is spot-on for the everyday style of some of the biggest names in attendance, like singer and actress Janelle Monáe, who’s a member of the gala’s host committee.
“Dandyism is pretty much a part of my fashion DNA through tailoring and suiting,” Monáe told the AP. “I’ve honored my ancestors and my family who wore their uniforms, wore their suits to serve our community. It fell right in line with who I am, and the people I want to bring with me that helped build this country.”
Serving on the host committee alongside Monáe are Simone Biles, Spike Lee, Ayo Edebiri, and André 3000, and the co-chairs of this year’s gala are actor Colman Domingo, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, hip-hop producer turned Louis Vuitton designer Pharrell Williams, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. For more about the history behind “Superfine” and a look at how dandyism is being reinterpreted in modern fashion, hear from the co-chairs themselves in the video from Vogue below.
And now that you know the backstory of this year’s meaningful theme, let’s get to what you came for — the most unforgettable looks! Below, check out the highlights from Monday night’s red carpet and see all the out-of-the-box outfits that everyone is talking about.
