Find out if she thinks the attack has changed him at all.

With a federal investigation underway, many Americans are still reeling from the assassination attempt of former President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, including members of his own family.

In an interview with Katie Couric on Instagram, Donald Trump’s estranged niece, Mary Trump, opened up about the attack, saying she didn’t believe it was happening at first. “It just felt surreal — I didn’t actually believe it because it didn’t seem possible,” she told Katie. “And then I turned on the news, and obviously it had happened, although it took a while to get any kind of details. There was a great deal of uncertainty for a while. But honestly, like at the very beginning, I felt sort of how I felt on Jan. 6.”

Ultimately, she doesn’t think the near-death experience will fundamentally change the former president mentally or emotionally. She also expressed dismay at why the Republicans would put him at the top of their ticket, citing his lack of empathy and lack of remorse, particularly “when it comes to people he doesn’t like.”

Mary has long been critical of her uncle: Her 2020 book Too Much and Never Enough was a juicy tell-all about how he came to be. Now, her upcoming book, Who Could Ever Love You, focuses on what growing up in a famous family did to her and her father (Trump’s older brother) Fred Jr., who died at 42 from a heart attack linked to years of alcohol abuse.

“I’ve told you what growing up did to Donald — now I’m telling the story of what it did to my dad and me,” she wrote on social media to promote the book.
