6 Spring Fashion Trends to Freshen up Your Closet

collage of spring fashion 2024 runway shows

Inspired by Gucci, Carolina Herrera, and more.

The days are getting longer, the sun is shining more, flowers are finally peeping up from beneath the ground, and we’re emerging from our winter caves (aka the blanket we’ve been wrapped up on the couch in for months). Spring, thank goodness, is finally here.

With the new season comes a fresh breath of air and the desire to dive into some much-needed decluttering. Some might take this to mean spring cleaning, but for those of us who love fashion, it’s prime time to make room for new, stylish pieces in your closet. And if inspiration fails you, we looked to the latest hits from high fashion runways to serve as a starting point. Translating looks from the catwalk can be difficult (and expensive), which is why we dissected surprisingly wearable designer trends that won’t break the bank.

From muted colors at Stella McCartney to wearable sparkle at Louis Vuitton, here are the six most accessible fashion trends of spring 2024 and how you can incorporate them into your wardrobe this season.

A trench coat will never be out of style, but it’s definitely back in a big way. Chances are you already have a beige one hanging in your closet, so this is an opportunity to repurpose items you already own. To make the old feel new, style your topper with bright white shoes for a look reminiscent of this Stella McCartney spring 2024 ready-to-wear look, or wear it open over a silky slip dress like the models at Gucci. If you want a total upgrade, consider shopping for a fun color like Kate Spade’s bright pink or an unexpected material like faux leather.

We’re going in circles this spring. Small, round bags were clutched by models on multiple runways for the spring 2024 season, including Alberta Ferretti and Hermes. You may already have a bulbous handbag in your collection (remember those straw clamshell clutches from a few summers ago?) because this is a trend that works year-round (pun intended). If you aren’t quite ready to commit, consider adding a round coin purse or a half-moon crossbody to your accessory arsenal instead of going full sphere. For a really wearable shape, we consider a bucket bag a roundabout way to try to trend, partially because we’re obsessed with this number from Veronica Beard’s delectable spring collection.

Feeling Blue

After a year of everything being red hot — remember Tomato Girl Summer? — designers are moving to the cooler side of the color wheel. Icy blue ensembles at Versace and Alberta Ferretti were paired with bright white accessories and clothing, seemingly inspired by the sky and clouds on a gorgeous spring day. If you’re feeling bold, opt for a head-to-toe monochrome look. But for a smaller dose of the It-Color, a pop of baby blue in the form of a shoe or oxford shirt is a great idea.

Everything’s Coming Up Roses

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. While the famous Devil Wears Prada quote poked fun at the seasonal print, the reality is that floral motifs will always blossom come springtime. Models at Simone Rocha had literal roses sewn into their dresses, while other designers like Sandy Liang added satin rosettes to skirts, tank tops, accessories, and nearly everything in between. Because three-dimensional floral accents can easily feel juvenile, take inspiration from the trend by wearing floral-printed slip dresses (Katie loves styles by Vince), or test out flowery jewelry or accessories, which feel a little less on-the-nose.

Thick belts with gigantic buckles used to be the way to accessorize your waist or hips, whether you were inspired by the ‘70s or early aughts (á la Paris Hilton). Wide belts are back again, but less to accentuate your waist and more as a textural element. Ferragamo featured beaded leather belts to break up monochrome ensembles, creating visual interest against a blank canvas. Meanwhile, Tom Ford designed metallic buckles almost as a piece of jewelry for slinky dresses. Large and in charge is certainly one way to interpret the trend, but if you want a less oversized version, opt for anything wider than what you’re used to.

This trend is self-explanatory: If it shines, glimmers, or glitters, it’s in for spring. Sparkles tend to be relegated to holiday dressing, so this seasonal shift is a welcome party. From metallic frocks by Isabel Marant to sequined gowns by Carolina Herrera, it’s clear that reflective materials are a standout. If you don’t want to look like a walking disco ball, incorporate small bejeweled elements into an outfit rather than making a head-to-toe statement. Even silver loafers, sunglasses accented in gold, or a stack of bracelets will nod to the trend without feeling overly flashy.
