The Renaissance singer was the undisputed queen of the night.
Harry Styles may have taken home Album of the Year, but the real winner of the Grammys 2023 was clear for all to see.
Beyoncé smashed the record for the artist with the most Grammys ever, winning four of the nine categories she was nominated in to bring her grand total to 32.
“I’m trying not to be too emotional,” the 41-year-old said on stage while receiving her record-breaking prize for dance/electronic album for Renaissance. “I’m trying to just receive this night.” She made heartfelt tributes to her “beautiful husband” and “the queer community for their love and for inventing the genre”.
Bey also won best R&B Song, Best Dance/Electronic recording and Best Traditional R&B Performance — but didn’t score any of the night’s main prizes.
Accepting the award for Album of the Year from one of his fans, Harry Styles demurred that there’s “no such thing as best.”
“I’ve been so, so inspired by every artist in this category with me,” he said. “I think on nights like tonight it’s so important to remember there is no such thing as best in music… this doesn’t happen to people like me very often.” That last sentence, for the record, is stirring up a little controversy on Twitter:
In any case, Styles’ record, Harry’s House, also earned the award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
A stunning performance to mark the forthcoming 50th anniversary of hip hop was another of the night’s major highlights — not to mention Viola Davis becoming an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-winner) with her award for best audio book for her autobiography Finding Me.
Davis is only the fourth Black person ever to achieve this, joining Whoopie Goldberg, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson on an exclusive list of just 18 EGOT winners ever.
