Our Editors Share Their Sunscreen Secrets

To say we love sunscreen would be a massive understatement.

The internet tends to be a breeding ground for unfounded conspiracy theories. Usually, these theories are about aliens or even a politician’s age, but one of the more recent trends takes aim at the skincare community, and it’s quite shocking: An anti-sunscreen movement is growing on TikTok, and unfortunately, the videos promote the harmful misinformation that you don’t need sun protection even though the FDA recommends applying SPF 15 daily (at least!), even on cloudy days.

Thankfully, the anti-sunscreen rhetoric isn’t shaking the staff at Katie Couric Media. We’re firm believers in the power of SPF and its ability to protect against UVA and UVB rays, which damage skin cells and increase the risk of skin cancer and signs of aging.

But it’s not as simple as just believing anymore. Long gone are the days of quickly grabbing the bottle with the highest coverage number and lowest price. Now, you have to do some serious research before even stepping into a store. One mineral formula may leave a way-too-white cast, whereas a chemical SPF can make your eyes sting. So instead of mindlessly scrolling through TikTok’s self-proclaimed skinfluencers to figure out what works best, we polled our team for their favorite sunscreen for the face (including the lips, an oft-forgotten area to protect). Need a basic sunscreen explainer first? We’ve got that, too.

The Best Sunscreen for the Face, According to Our Editors

EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

Dermstore

“EltaMD’s clear sunscreen is my go-to base every season, but the tinted sunscreen replaces my foundation come summer. Not only is it full coverage clear zinc that guarantees protection from the sun, but it also makes my skin tone appear more even when the sweaty summer heat seeps into my pores. Lightweight, hypoallergenic, and tinted? This base has it all!” – Sam Donsky, Audience Development Manager

Supergoop Glow Screen Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40

Supergoop

“I love this product so much that I’ve retired my foundation and just use this instead. It acts as a sunscreen (which we love!) but is also tinted, so it blends perfectly with your skin to give you a sun-kissed glow and subtly hide any little imperfections you don’t feel like showing off that day. Other pluses: It doesn’t sting your eyes or make you too shiny.” – Julia Lewis, Producer

Kosas DreamBeam SPF 40 PA++++

Kosas DreamBeam SPF 40 PA++++

Kosas

“I consider myself a sunscreen aficionado. At any given time, I have at least five products in rotation, not counting my additional SPF choices for body and hair (yes, hair!). That being said, this passion has led me to try just about every brand available, from American to Australian to Korean. Most mineral SPFs leave your face feeling dry at best or with a Casper finish at worst. That’s where Kosas comes in as the GOAT. It’s my most recent SPF obsession, leaving me with a magical, dewy finish unlike any mineral sunscreen I’ve ever tried. It has a zinc oxide base, but it’s packed with ceramides and peptides for a more comfortable and hydrating formula that actually improves your skin while protecting it. They just launched a new version for the summer that I need to add to my arsenal, and it has a glowy tint that gives you that sun-kissed, post-vacation look.” — Justine Carreon, Affiliate Content Manager

Odacité Flex-Perfecting Sunscreen

Odacité

“Odacité is my best-kept secret. I’m absolutely in love with this light, dewy, clear-tinted sunscreen. I wear it every single day. It has the perfect light coverage while adding a lovely, healthy-looking glow. It comes in a variety of shades and uses color-adapting pigments to match your skin tone. Odacité was created honoring French craftsmanship, but made in America.”— Samantha Olguin, Account Executive

Dune The Mug Guard

The Mug Guard Invisible Gel Face Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Dune

“I have very sensitive skin, and many SPFs cause an allergic reaction — but not this one! It’s a gel formula, so it also doesn’t turn me into a grease ball by the end of the day.” – Tess Bonn, Senior Writer

GOPure Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF

GOPure Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF

GOPure

“This mineral sunscreen offers top-notch protection and a little bit of coverage for days when I don’t feel like wearing a full face of makeup. The best part is it doesn’t leave that annoying white layer other mineral sunscreens can leave behind.”— Sara Levine, Managing Editor, Newsletters

Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50

Super Spritz SPF50 Face Mist

Ulta

“I recently tried the Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50, and it’s quickly become my favorite face sunscreen. The light, refreshing mist is so easy to apply and perfect for touch-ups throughout the day. It doesn’t mess up my makeup and feels incredibly soothing on my skin, thanks to the aloe and cucumber. Plus, it’s water-resistant and reef-safe, so I feel good about using it both at the beach and daily.” – Victoria Bellucci, Manager, Account Management

IT Cosmetics CC Cream

CC+ Color Correcting Full Coverage Cream SPF 50+

Nordstrom

“It feels like cheating to put this on the list because this CC cream is so pigmented that it acts as a foundation for me while offering protection from harmful rays. It offers full coverage and SPF 50, and once applied, it seriously does not budge.” – Sara Levine, Managing Editor, Newsletters

onekind Solardrops SPF 55 Daily Broad Spectrum Serum

Solardrops SPF 55 Daily Broad Spectrum Serum

“As someone with very pale and very oily skin, finding a sunscreen that doesn’t give me the feeling of bathing in an oil slick is a necessity. This one from onekind leaves behind a semi-matte finish, is grippy enough to act as a makeup primer, and sinks into my skin without intense blending. What really sealed the deal for me though is that it’s water-resistant up to 80 minutes, which most daily face sunscreens can’t claim.” – Katie Pittman, Commerce Editor

Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen

Daily UV Defense Sunscreen

Innisfree

“Sunscreen became a part of my daily routine within the last five months (reserve your judgment). Innisfree is inexpensive, not greasy, and was recommended by my favorite dermatologist on Instagram. My first attempt at incorporating SPF into my routine was a slam dunk!” – Adriana Fazio, Producer

Neutrogena Clear Face Oil Free

Amazon

“The Neutrogena Face sunscreen is a must every time I go out into the sun. My skin is prone to breaking out and this sunscreen goes on easily and doesn’t block my pores.” – Leslie Picard, Chief Revenue Officer
