Fannie Lou Hamer was born in Mississippi in 1917. She quit school at 12 to work full time in the fields at a plantation. She first learned she had the right vote at 45 years old. After registering to vote her boss said she would have to, “withdraw her registration or leave because they wasn’t ready for that in Mississippi.” She immediately left the job and went on to become an activist for voter registration.
