Annette Kellerman began swimming competitively, and by 16 she’d broken the women’s world record while making waves by wearing a men’s one-piece suit instead of a traditional Victorian swimming costume.

In 1914 she launched her own line of swimwear based on her once-scandalous one-piece. They sold so well that in America a one piece bathing suit was simply called an “Annette Kellerman.”
