Steven Yeun Makes History as First-Ever Asian American Nominated for Best Actor Oscar

Ahead of the Oscar nominations, Katie interviewed “Minari” director Lee Isaac Chung and the film’s star Steven Yeun.

This year’s 2021 Oscar nominations made history on several fronts, with two women nominated in the Best Director category — Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell — and Steven Yeun becoming the first Asian American actor to be nominated in the Best Actor category.

Zhao, who picked up six nominations for her film “Nomadland,” is also the first woman of color to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars.

Yeun was nominated for his leading role in “Minari,” which also received a total of six Oscar nominations. Ahead of the Oscars nominations, Katie interviewed Yeun and the film’s director, Lee Isaac Chung about the critically acclaimed film. They chatted about the film’s moving story of a Korean family relocating to a farm in Arkansas in the 1980s, and how it touches on the immigrant American Dream and similar themes in Chung’s own life.
