We’ve Got Your Back: Ryan Cooper Introduces Easy Back-Strengthening Exercises That’ll Make All the Difference

Anyone can do these exercises.

When you think of easy, at-home workouts, you’re probably picturing a round of push-ups and a set of crunches. While those classic calisthenics have a special place in our hearts, there are parts of our bodies that we often neglect to exercise — namely, our backs.

That’s why Ryan Cooper has devised a two-minute routine designed to strengthen your back. Why, exactly, does that even matter? Well, weak back muscles can actually cause lower back pain. Which is something you’ve likely experienced, given that 50-80 percent of adults will experience low back pain sometime in their lifetimes. We’re in favor of preventing those annoying aches and pains, and it’s probably safe to say that you are, too.

For this quick routine, Cooper says you only need an exercise band. Since exercise bands are so flexible (literally), you can fold one up in your purse or throw one into your suitcase before you go on that work trip. Don’t have a band? Cooper recommends this set of resistance bands. They’re available on Amazon, so they’ll show up on your doorstep in two days if you have Prime.

For the simple set that Cooper demonstrates with John’s son Henry Molner, you’ll take the band of your choice and stretch it out between your arms. Then, you’ll hold the band and stretch one hand above your head as you pull the band downward with another. That’s it.

Sound a little bit too easy? Cooper thinks less is more: “I don’t like to do long workouts. It’s boring. I like to do short, quick, punchy exercises.”
