We interviewed Padma Lakshmi earlier this week — and now she’s taking over Weekend Whats! Here are her recs:
What to Watch: My new show Taste the Nation premiered last week on Hulu. It’s a rebuttal to Washington’s anti-immigrant stance, exploring the origins of what we consider to be “American food,” and the immigrants and families who make it.
What to Listen to: “They Say I’m Different” by Betty Davis — and anything by Marcia Griffiths.
What to Read: The Cooking Gene by my dear friend Michael Twitty, traces the roots of Southern food as we know it. Jubilee by Toni Tipton-Martin is an incredible cookbook and anthropological study of African American cooking.
What to Follow: I love writer/director Ava DuVernay, and I’ve been learning a lot from Rachel Cargle, as well.
What to Cook: It’s very simple, but I did a cooking video on South Indian Lemon Rice on my Instagram and it took off! You only need a few ingredients.
