We’ve discussed this year’s fall fashion trends and easy ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe — no matter your age or style savvy — but have you considered color? It’s one challenge to keep an eye out for this season’s hottest looks, but it’s another to incorporate the right colors into that search. It sounds like a lot to keep in mind, doesn’t it?

To make your shopping expedition easier, I’m providing a cheat sheet for this autumn’s hottest hues — good news: it’s a short list! — and what styles to apply them to if you’re really trying to be on-trend.

You might be saying to yourself, “Alison, I’m not about to step outside in a monochromatic burnt orange outfit, so don’t even try it.” But don’t worry; while amber is a typical fall color, it’s not one I’m suggesting you swath yourself in for Thanksgiving. (God forbid you match the sweet potato casserole!)

Even more good news: Some of these trending shades are likely already in your closet. I’m talking gray and brown. Yes, Miranda Priestley might say, “Gray and brown for fall? Groundbreaking,” but I promise you’ll stand out in these rich hues if you take my advice on styling them with a spin. Spoiler alert: Throw out those outdated rules about wearing black and brown together.
