As the weather starts to warm up this spring, the KCM team is looking to upgrade our outdoor accessories. If you rushed to buy bike gear, and want to step-up your bike gear game, we found the best options for a casual, commuter cyclist to a road cyclist that loves a long weekend ride to the brewery or the park. You can’t go wrong with a good pair of bike shorts and a stylish, yet retro bike bell. Strap on your helmet, and get those miles in!
#1 A good helmet
Of course we encourage the casual bike ride to the park or beach, but with those trips, safety is a must. Investing in a stylish yet comfortable bike helmet is a priority and the top of our list. We love this Giro style in white and glacier. It has enough vents so you won’t overheat and an adjustable dial for a universal fit.
#2 Great bike shorts
KCM’s Clare has recommended these bike shorts from Girlfriend Collective in the past and she’s here to endorse them again. You can’t go wrong with bike shorts with a pocket. These GC high rise compression bike shorts are functional— they can hold your keys, phone, or small wallet once you get to your destination. They come in 11 fantastic colors and we’ve already added at least 3 of the spring colors to our cart.
#3 Windbreaker
There’s nothing worse than getting a little chilly on a long ride. We recommend grabbing a quick windbreaker to add to your bike bag or backpack in case the trip requires a more cozy ‘fit. The evergreen anorak pullover from Everlane comes in a bright pear color and is water resistant with adjustable ties at the waist
#4 A good bike lock
A good bike lock is a must. Full stop. We love this one from kryptonite, equipped with a flex cable and deadbolt, and two stainless steel keys. You can easily lock the U-bolt to your bike while riding for comfort.
#5 A bike bell
Any urban cyclist knows that a bike bell is key to making your way around the city. We love this one from knog in the sleek, minimalist brass, copper, or black options.
#6 A retro bike bell
If you’re looking for a more retro look we love this bike bell from Kickstand Cycleworks that comes in various bubblegum colors. Outfit your bike with a cheery powder blue or berry color.
#7 Bike lights
If you’re a nocturnal rider or take long trips to and from destinations in the city, good bike lights are essential for your safety. We like this bike light pack from NiteRider.
#8 Chamois Creme
Long rides and consistent bike riding can add up! Especially on your lower back and even lower! Invest in some chamois creme to reduce irritation, odor, and discomfort.
#9 Bike pump
It’s best to keep your tires fully inflated before every ride and to check them weekly to make sure there’s no holes or flats. In an easy thing to store in your hall closet, shed, or garage is a simple bike pump, ready to use whenever you need.
#10 Bike seat bag
Besides being incredibly useful, for things like holding your phone, wallet, or keys, a bike seat bag is essential for storing a bike repair kit. This bike seat bag from Backcountry gives off a Cool Cyclist Energy. Opt for the orange or slate color and you’re all set.
#11 Water bottle holder
Grabbing your water bottle from your bag can be a hassle— outfit your bike with a sleek water bottle cage. This one comes in five colors, and we’re eyeing the simple matte tan one.
#12 Bike water bottle
Don’t scuff up your hydroflask or carry around your giant nalgene, and keep a handy bike water bottle in your water bottle cage. But beware—collecting fun bike water bottles can become an addiction!
