Does Your Sex Life Need Red Light Therapy?

The sex toy is getting a technological upgrade.

Red light therapy is moving beyond skincare. The technology, also known as photobiomodulation, has been studied for its ability to stimulate collagen production and improve certain signs of skin aging, and researchers have also investigated its potential role in everything from muscle recovery to pain management. But apparently, sexual wellness is next: Instead of face masks, we’re now seeing red light show up in sex toys.

Is red light therapy safe down there?

There’s some promising research on using red and near-infrared light on vaginal tissue, but the evidence is still limited — and not every red light device is designed for intimate use.

Research on red light therapy for sexual wellness is extremely limited, but studies are exploring its potential role in women’s intimate health.

A 2019 review of the available research concluded that preliminary evidence suggested PBMT was safe and potentially effective for genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Symptoms targeted include vaginal dryness, discomfort, thinning of vaginal tissue, and more, caused by declining estrogen levels during and after menopause. More recently, a 2026 randomized clinical trial found some improvements in sexual function among women with GSM who received PBM alongside pelvic-floor muscle training.

But don't confuse promising research with proven results: There isn’t currently enough evidence to say that RLT can treat sexual dysfunction or increase libido across the board. And not all red light devices are intended for intimate use — don't assume what you use on your face is safe for your genital tissue

Which brings us to exciting news: LELO has released the MONA Spectra, a vibrator specifically designed for both internal and external use that incorporates red LED light alongside more familiar forms of stimulation. For now, it's best to think of this as an emerging wellness category to ask your healthcare provider about, rather than a proven treatment for sexual health concerns. But if your interest is piqued, you're not alone. We were curious, too, so we did some digging.

What does the MONA Spectra do?

LELO, a wellness brand known for its luxury, high-tech sex toys, just launched the MONA Spectra, a G-spot vibrator that combines vibration with red LED light and gentle warmth.

According to LELO, the red LEDs emit light at 615-625 nanometers and is intended to support circulation, collagen production, and tissue elasticity. LELO's own user manual states, the device "is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition."

What it is designed to do is provide sexual stimulation. The MONA Spectra offers 16 vibration intensity levels, and the LED array produces gentle warmth during use. Connecting the device to the LELO app also unlocks additional vibration options and other light settings, including near-infrared light. It's made from silky, body-safe silicone with an ergonomic design and fully waterproof construction, so it can be used in many settings and cleaned easily.

As with anything health-related, it's a deeply personal choice. But if you're ready to take the next step with your red light therapy, the MONA Spectra is currently 10 percent off with the code SPECTRA10.
