About Otherworld
Pancakes and waffles are a weekend morning staple, but they’re not what you’d call a “balanced” breakfast. Most recipes are heavy on the butter and refined sugar and low in nutritional value. College friends Jen Ballen and Joe Magliano dropped their childhood pancake habits as they learned more about health and sustainability — or lack thereof — in the food system, but didn’t give up on the search for a healthier alternative. Their search led them to create Otherworld, a line of vegan pancake and waffle mixes that are packed with upcycled fruits, veggies, and whole grains while still being fluffy and delicious. Just combine equal parts water and mix, and you’re on the way to a breakfast as delicious as it is healthy.

Why we love them
If you ever feel like the Belgian waffles or stack of chocolate chip pancakes on the breakfast menu are taunting you, we’re 100 percent with you. Imagine our joy when we found out about Otherworld. We’re not sure how, but the whole wheat flour-based mixes result in light, fluffy pancakes and waffles — no egg-beating required — and contain plenty of fiber, iron, calcium, and other important nutrients. KCM’s Alissa loves the Banana Chocolate Chip mix, which gets its flavor from banana powder, and Ciara can’t get enough of the Chocolate mix, which she says tastes like the rich, dark chocolate waffles her mom makes for birthday breakfasts. They’re the perfect level of sweet and have the added benefit of brain-boosting reishi mushrooms.
