About Hu

For Jordan Brown, his sister Jessica Karp, and her husband Jason Karp, founding Hu was the natural next step in their paths to eating smarter and cleaner. Jason had successfully overcome several autoimmune diseases through changes to his diet and lifestyle, while Jordan and Jessica had revolutionized their own diets after reading up on nutrition and wellness. The trio opened a paleo restaurant and developed a vegan chocolate to use in their baked goods, and the brand took off. In the years since, Hu has added grain-free cookies and crackers to its lineup, along with inventive chocolate bars and bites in flavors like Cashew Butter + Orange Vanilla and Salty Dark Chocolate. Ultimately, their goal is to help customers “get back to human” with minimally processed, humanely produced foods that still taste great.

Why we love them

If chocolate’s one of your greatest weaknesses, you’re in the right place. Hu’s chocolate — whether you go for the bars or the snack-sized gems — offers the flavor we crave, but with fewer, higher-quality ingredients that make them ideal for those with food sensitivities. The chocolate base is stunningly simple: Organic cacao, unrefined organic coconut sugar, and organic fair-trade cocoa butter. There are no soy fillers, no dairy, no palm oil, and much less sugar than your average bar. KCM’s Alissa is obsessed with the Hazelnut Coffee bar, which is crunchy and packed with organic, Fair-Trade-certified coffee. For a less sweet option, go for Hu’s hunks: They’re cashews, almonds, or chewy and sour dried goldenberries with a thin coating of rich chocolate that make a stellar snack.
