When Phoebe Yu first moved to Melbourne from China, she ran into an unexpected roadblock while prepping her new home: It was nearly impossible to find bedding that was both eco-friendly and comfortable, and what she did find was absurdly expensive. As a veteran of the home goods industry, Yu was well-acquainted with the environmental toll of textile production. So Yu spent two years working closely with a textile university to develop an organic bamboo fabric that uses 500 times less water and produces 52 percent less CO2 than traditional cotton bedding.
