About Birdies
Bianca Gates and Marisa Sharkey loved to entertain at home, but could never find house shoes that were both fashionable and supportive. So in 2015, they took matters into their own hands and founded Birdies, a line of flats as stylish as heels, and as comfortable as top-of-the-line slippers. Birdies combine seven layers of cushioning with luxurious materials like velvet, suede, and leather, for shoes with serious staying power (and there are now outdoor-friendly options and sneakers as well). To support its mission of elevating women, Birdies partnered with Step Up to mentor teenage girls in underserved communities and has donated more than 36,000 pairs of shoes through Soles4Souls, which keeps used shoes out of landfills and provides economic opportunities for women in Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Why we love them
One of the byproducts of the Covid-19 pandemic has been piles of neglected high heels in the backs of our closets, and we’re inclined to think that’s not going to change anytime soon. We’re all about the current sneaker trend, but Birdies offers a “nicer” option for work, dinners, and special occasions, without sacrificing comfort. KCM’s Lisa said her Falcons were comfortable straight out of the box, and the fact that they’re water-resistant is a huge plus for those persistently rainy spring days. Our colleague Bianca has avoided flats for years due to their minimal arch support, but she’s now a Blackbirds convert: They’re supportive, stylish enough to elevate a pair of jeans, and machine-washable to boot. With everyday options like Swifts or bejeweled, wedding-ready Swans, Birdies has you covered every day of the week.
