Trump’s Attempt To Win Over the Libertarian Party Falls Flat

Donald Trump addresses the Libertarian Party National Convention at the Washington Hilton with a "Become Ungovernable" sign behind him

He asked for the party’s presidential nomination — but never filed the paperwork.

Donald Trump made a forceful attempt to win over the Libertarian Party at its national convention over the weekend, but it’s safe to say his efforts were scorned. Here’s the scoop.

Trump urged Libertarian delegates to “vote for me”

Trump was booed and jeered as he urged delegates to “nominate me or at least vote for me” during his speech. Later, when a member put Trump’s name forward to be considered for the party’s presidential nomination, another man tried to argue that he didn’t qualify — and received a standing ovation.

You can see the crowd’s hard reception for Trump in the video below:

The Libertarian Party chair determined that Trump was ineligible

Libertarian Party chair Angela McArdle determined that Trump was ineligible for the nomination as he never filed the paperwork. Trump responded on Truth Social, posting: “The reason I didn’t file paperwork for the Libertarian Nomination, which I would have absolutely gotten if I wanted it (as everyone could tell by the enthusiasm of the Crowd last night!), was the fact that, as the Republican Nominee, I am not allowed to have the Nomination of another Party.”

Chase Oliver wins the Libertarian Party nomination

Chase Oliver, a 38-year-old political activist, ultimately won the Libertarian Party’s nomination. He told CNN that he’s aiming to win 2% of the national vote in November, saying: “I’m ready to continue to be a fly in the ointment of the two-party system.” He added that he’s planning to speak to “as many people as possible” to shake up the balance of power between Trump, President Biden, and Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Oliver’s brutal assessment of Trump

Oliver was scathing of Trump’s attempt to muscle in on the nomination. At a press conference following Trump’s speech, he said it had been a “mistake” to let him speak. “You are not a libertarian, Donald Trump,” he said. “You’re a war criminal and you deserve to be shamed by everyone in this hall.”
