Meet your newest class of leaders within the Biden administration
With the electoral college officially confirming Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States, we’ve made a comprehensive, running list of his growing cabinet class. Biden has vowed to nominate a mix of diverse officials, a collection of progressives, and has already favored experienced Capitol Hill veterans and confidants in an effort to replicate policies from the Obama administration.
Biden made strides in tapping Janet Yellen as the first female Treasury secretary, Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III to be the first Black secretary of defense, Cuban immigrant Alejandro N. Mayorkas to run the Department of Homeland Security, and Xavier Becerra, the son of Mexican immigrants to serve as the secretary of health and human services.
Representative Marcia L. Fudge of Ohio was chosen to head the Housing and Urban Development Department, after lobbying for Secretary of Agriculture. Instead, the job was given to Tom Vilsack, who served as USDA secretary during the Obama years. Mayor Pete Buttigieg was tapped as Secretary of Transportation, the first openly LGBTQ cabinet member. Watch our IG Live chat with Katie and Pete, where Katie had a wide-ranging conversation with Pete on politics and the future of the Democratic party.
As President-elect Joe Biden names more of his coterie of close advisers and friends to his cabinet, we’ll update the list accordingly.
