A few years ago, Timothy Cannon, MD, began to notice a peculiar trend. Within six months, he began treating three patients for advanced colon cancer who were all young and physically active — extraordinarily so. Two of them had run several 100-mile races, while the other had competed in dozens of triathlons.
Was it a coincidence — or could extreme exercise somehow be causing colorectal cancer?
Dr. Cannon wanted to find out, and he launched a study that’s created a lot of buzz. As a longtime cancer advocate whose husband, Jay, died of early onset CRC in 1998, the findings caught Katie’s interest. She spoke with Dr. Cannon about his research, what he suspects could make endurance athletes more vulnerable to the disease, and much more.
