It’s been a big week for Golden Bachelor fans: First, we found out that Gerry Turner is in a new relationship, and yesterday we learned that the love bug has bitten Susan Noles as well. And now we have even bigger news — The Golden Bachelor has officially been renewed for season 2, and the lead has been announced! Here’s everything we know about the second season of the show and the man who’ll be handing out roses.
Who is Mel Owens, the new Golden Bachelor?
In a press release, ABC debuted its new lead: 66-year-old Mel Owens. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, it’s because Owens was not a contestant on Joan Vassos’s season of The Golden Bachelorette — breaking from the usual Bachelor/Bachelorette tradition of choosing a lead from a previous season.
Owens is a former NFL player from the midwest: He was born in Michigan and went to high school in Illinois. He attended the University of Michigan before being drafted to the L.A. Rams in 1981, where he spent nine seasons as a linebacker. After retiring in 1989, he moved to Orange County, California and became a lawyer, mainly helping those seeking justice for sports-related injuries, per the release.
Owens has two children from his first marriage, though “life took an unexpected turn with the passing of his father and the end of his marriage,” the release says. “Owens channeled his energy into being the best father he could be, focusing on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams.”
Now he’s ready and looking for love again. His search is “rooted in the simple joys of companionship – sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple,” per ABC. Owens is apparently looking to find “that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years” — so fans can expect plenty of football and sports puns on the show, we’re sure. We wouldn’t be surprised if there was a sports-themed group date, either — flag football, we can only hope.
When is The Golden Bachelor season 2 airing?
ABC didn’t confirm the schedule of Golden Bachelor season 2, but Deadline reports that it’s likely to air in the fall again, if ABC follows similar schedules to the last season of The Golden Bachelor and The Golden Bachelorette.
We’ll be keeping an eye on any updates about the next season of the Golden Bachelor, and will be sure to keep you in the loop right here.
