Golden Globe Nominations Are In — Here’s Who Made the Coveted List

Plus, we’ve got the details on who will host the highly-anticipated event.

Grab your popcorn, the 2024 Golden Globes are almost here! On Sunday, one of the most anticipated award ceremonies in Hollywood will take place and some celebrities could go home winners.

As expected, the summer movie phenomenon “Barbenheimer” led the nominees list, with nine nods for Barbie and eight for Oppenheimer. (Fun tidbit: Barbie producer and star Margot Robbie told Variety that Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven initially asked her to move the premiere date of her smash hit, but that she rejected his request. “If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date,” she reportedly responded. If that isn’t girl power, we don’t know what is.)

On the TV side, Succession continued its reign, boasting the most noms with nine, followed by The Bear and Only Murders in the Building, with five each.

After a struggle to find a host, the Globes selected comedian Jo Koy to emcee the big night and he admitted that he has a lot of nerves when it comes to taking on the high-stakes gig. “I haven’t slept,” Koy told the Hollywood Reporter. “And I’ve never watched this many movies and TV shows in my life.”

Normally, the Golden Globes already gets a lot of fanfare because it’s seen as the official kickoff of Hollywood’s awards season. But the stakes are especially high this time around, given that it’ll be the first such ceremony since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association shut down after myriad scandals tied to its lack of voter diversity and its revamp under new owner, Dick Clark Productions.

As we look toward the highly anticipated ceremony, we rounded up everything you need to know, plus the latest details on the host.

When are the 2024 Golden Globes?

The 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony is slated to grace our screens on Sunday, Jan. 7, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET (or for you on the West Coast, 5 to 8 p.m. PT). The event will be held at its usual haunt, the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Who’s hosting the 2024 Golden Globes?

You might be wondering, “Jo, who?” He had a much-publicized relationship with fellow comedian Chelsea Handler before their split in July 2022, but he also has some fame in his own right, with six stand-up specials on Netflix. He called the opportunity to host the Globes his childhood dream.

“I’m now living something that I would watch as a kid, something that indirectly inspired me to do what I do, seeing everyone from Bob Hope to Billy Crystal to Whoopi Goldberg do the Oscars, and Ricky (Gervais) and Tina (Fey) doing the Globes,” he told USA Today. Now, I’m in the captain’s seat and I’m loving it.”

Before Koy took the job, several A-list celebrities turned down the opportunity to host, including comedians Chris Rock and Ali Wong. Even the beloved trio of co-hosts for the podcast Smartless — Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman — turned down an offer to emcee the Globes, according to two people familiar with the show. (All of their representatives declined to comment on these reports.)

There was also little hope that former Saturday Night Live stars Amy Poehler and Tina Fey would return to co-host together. Poehler previously vowed that the pair would never do it again, despite getting critical acclaim for the four times they hosted the event.

While you may find it hard to believe that anyone would turn down such a high-profile occasion, Hollywood insiders say talent bowing out of hosting duties is nothing new. “It’s a thankless job,” one celebrity publicist told CNN.

How can you watch the Golden Globes?

The Golden Globes will be broadcast live on CBS this year instead of its previous longtime broadcaster, NBC. (The ceremony will also be available to stream on Paramount+ — which offers free trials, FYI — and the CBS app.)

In case you missed all the network-related drama behind the event, the Globes was previously dropped by NBC following record-low viewership: Last year, it brought in just 6.3 million people, compared to 6.9 million at the height of the pandemic in 2021, according to data from Nielsen.

The awards ceremony is also still trying to mend its reputation following boycotts over allegations of racism — in 2021, the Los Angeles Times published a report documenting the lack of Black members within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presented the awards at the time. The awards ceremony has since been reorganized under its new leadership, Dick Clark Productions, with nominees and winners being chosen by a voting body of 300 members from 75 countries. The Globes’ new owner, Todd Boehly, vowed to “transition the organization from a not-for-profit with no accountability and bad governance to an organization where there is employee-based accountability.”
