I was at a small Halloween party when I heard the shocking news that Matthew Perry had died at just 54 years old. Like many others, I was overwhelmed with sadness. The charming, sardonic Chandler Bing had achieved success he never thought possible, but had been plagued by demons for decades.
I so admired how forthcoming he was with his battle with addiction, especially in his book, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. My friend and former producer, Matt Lombardi, sent me an interview I had done with Matthew when Friends was ending. Watching it, I was struck by how much his suffering was glossed over. I did that interview nearly twenty years ago when so much about addiction was considered taboo. Matthew undoubtedly helped so many people by speaking about his disease in painful, unvarnished detail. I just wish he had found peace and happiness for himself.
