Demi Moore and her Landman character, Cami, don’t have a lot in common — Cami’s life revolves around the oil industry in Texas, while Moore’s an award-winning actress. But they face new challenges and chapters with the same gusto.
Moore, who just turned 63, is a constant source of aging inspiration, and in recent years she’s increasingly expressed her excitement for what’s ahead. So, when we chatted with her about the hit Paramount+ drama, we had to ask about the source of her positive attitude about aging — which is certainly something worth embracing, but has for so long been presented as something to avoid.
“Life really is what you make it. And I think it’s easy to focus on all that isn’t rather than really celebrating all that is,” she says.
“My daughter Scout at one point said, ‘I want to quit wasting time on all that I’m not, when I could be celebrating all that I am.’ And that is the state where I am every day. Let me celebrate all that is and find joy in what is, including walking through challenging times.”
She told Entertainment Tonight last year that she was “feeling damn good” about this chapter of life as she turned 62. And in a conversation with Vanity Fair about 2024’s The Substance (in which she played a woman who did not feel confident about getting older in the spotlight), she expressed gratitude for having received such a complex role: “I don’t feel like I’ve had material come along in quite a while that gave me an opportunity to do this kind of work.” In fact, she said that at the end of 2021, there was “a point where I really was at a crossroads of wondering if this part of my life was complete.”
Clearly, she was mistaken. She won a Golden Globe for her performance in The Substance, and she seems to have an even more prominent role in season 2 of Landman. Her character is evolving from the wife of an oil titan (played by Jon Hamm) into a grieving widow tasked with taking over his responsibilities as CEO after his death.
“The devastation for Cami of losing the love of her life and having to navigate the grief at the same time as having to protect [his legacy] — and step into a role and navigate treacherous waters that she knows and has been around but hasn’t been in the day-to-day — in a way, that’s just another layer of losing Monty,” she says about her character’s season 2 journey.
