Getting lost in the magic of music and being transported to another place by a book are two of life's greatest pleasures — so how about combining the two?

Author Emma Straub, who you know for titles like This Time Tomorrow and The Vacationers, does just that in her newest novel, American Fantasy. The book follows Annie, a new divorcee and empty-nester who ends up on a themed cruise starring the boy band she obsessed over in the 1990s. As is the case for many folks who take a cruise, she initially feels out of step with all the overzealous enthusiasm on board. As the trip goes on, though, she finds herself getting back in touch with her youth in a way she didn't expect — and develops an in-the-flesh friendship with one of her former idols. She's suddenly riding high on the high seas, but, as the book jacket puts it, "a lot can go wrong on a ship ruled by hormones and hope, frustration and fantasy."

American Fantasy is an engrossing tale about memory, fame, our relationship with our past and present selves, and, of course, the deep connection we feel with the music that shaped our lives. If this sounds up your alley, you'll probably fly through its pages — and then wonder what to read next.

We asked Straub for her recommendations. Below, she shares five special books that hit on similar themes about the ways music influences who we are and who we become, and we can't wait to dive into them.

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

"The absolute GOAT. Is this a music book? Sure, yes. It's got record producers and musicians. But it's really about time — and friendship. One of the greatest books ever written, full stop."

The Uncool by Cameron Crowe

"If you enjoyed Almost Famous, you will love Crowe's memoir, which tells the story (so many stories!) of his youth, many of which went on to build the backbone of his great movie."

The Wishbones by Tom Perrotta

"A deep cut from the Perrotta-verse, this book about a Jersey wedding band is funny and moving. If you've only read Perrotta's more hardcore books (like The Leftovers or Little Children), try this one on for size. He can do it all!"

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

"You've probably read this one. Everyone read this one! And for good reason! It's a modern classic."

My Name is Barbra by Barbra Streisand

"I listened to all 60 hours of this audiobook, and I would listen to 60 more. There is never enough Barbra. Her stories are legendary. Even if you're not a super fan, you will be thrilled by her epic life."
