About Caroline's Cakes
Caroline’s Cakes comes from fittingly sweet beginnings: In 1982, Caroline Ragsdale Reutter made a traditional, layered caramel cake for her son’s christening that had partygoers in awe. Caroline soon started receiving requests for her baked goods (because sometimes, word of mouth works wonders), and began sharing her time-honored desserts with a wider and wider circle. As demand grew, Caroline dedicated herself to refining her recipe and overcoming production challenges in order to get her fresh cakes as far afield as Hawaii and Alaska. Decades later, Caroline’s spirit lives on in her namesake company, now run by her son, which offers its devoted fans Caroline’s signature cakes and mouth-watering Southern staples like pimento cheese, Maryland crab cakes, and Virginia peanuts.
Why we love them
Here at KCM, we have a soft spot for Caroline’s: The original 7-Layer Caramel Cake was a favorite of Katie’s dad — which she wrote about lovingly in her memoir Going There. Plus, practically speaking, most of us don’t have the time or skill to create many-layered confections like the light and fluffy Coconut Cloud or rich chocolate Bliss cakes. Ordering one takes all the stress out of hosting, and since Caroline’s Cakes ship frozen, you can order the treats you need well in advance of your special event, without worrying about freshness. And if you just can’t decide which one to order, head over to the ½ cake options, which include two half cakes in some of Caroline’s classic flavors.
