When it comes to at-home workouts, the barriers are real: gear, space, and motivation (arguably the most elusive of all). But according to Katie’s Pilates instructor, Ashley Patten, building an effective, feel-good Pilates setup doesn’t require a reformer the size of a twin bed or a home gym worthy of Architectural Digest. All it really takes? A few smart tools, a spare corner, and maybe an energizing playlist to set the tone.
“In an ideal world, you’ll have enough space for your mat and two to three feet around you in all directions,” Patten says. This ensures you have enough room to move freely without knocking things over or stubbing toes. “If you’re taking a virtual class, it’s nice to have your device a couple of feet away from you, so you can see your screen without having to strain.” Another option? Stream your workout to your TV for a clearer, neck-friendly view. To help you transform even the tiniest patch of floor into a personal Pilates haven, Patten shares the exact gear she uses in Katie’s private sessions — as well as why she swears by it, and how to use it for the biggest impact. She’s also offering an exclusive code for one free month of her entire on-demand library of follow-along workouts. Just use the code WakeUpCall (case sensitive) to get started.
Stakt Mat
Stakt
At the base of every Pilates routine should be a supportive mat. Not only will it make your workout more comfortable, but it helps keep you from sliding around on slick floors or rugs. “This one has a bit of ‘stick’ to it, so your hands and feet never feel like they’re slipping,” Patten explains. “It also folds up nicely in an accordion-style, so you’ll never have to worry about it unrolling, and it doesn’t take up as much space as a traditional yoga mat.”
Magic Circle

If you only choose to invest in one piece of equipment, Patten insists it should be a Pilates ring. “Katie calls this one the ‘ring of fire’ because it really kicks things up a notch during a workout, but you can also use it to help deepen stretches,” she says. Because it’s flat, the ring is incredibly easy to stow away under a couch or bed or behind a TV stand.
Therabands

These versatile stretchy bands are easily Katie’s favorite gear to work with. Hook them around your feet to deepen seated stretches, use them for strength-building resistance exercises, or for an additional challenge to low-impact exercises. “I use these when Katie is feeling stiff or tired, but also when she’s on the road, because they’re so easy to travel with,” Patten says.
Lacrosse Balls
Amazon
An unexpected use for lacrosse balls? Releasing tension in the hips, back, and neck. “They’re also fantastic for opening up your feet, as they can help release muscle knots and ease pain,” Patten says.
Foam Roller
Amazon
“This roller is so good for mobility, and great for a pre-workout warm-up session,” Patten says. Lay on top of it and “roll” it underneath your quads or hips to stimulate blood flow and break up muscle knots. “You can also use it as a replacement for a Pilates barrel, a half-moon shaped device which you typically use for extension or flexion movements.” It’s a great post-workout tool, too, says Patten. “Using a foam roller while you’re watching TV after your routine is a great way to sneak in some recovery — even five minutes can go a long way.”
