And what problems they target.
Patients often ask me if they should use lubricant and/or vaginal moisturizer. But before I can answer that question, I need to know what their menopause symptoms are because these two products treat different issues and work distinctly to combat them. I know it’s confusing — moisturizer and lube sound like the same thing…they’re both meant to moisten. But using them incorrectly will be frustrating because you won’t see the results you’re hoping for. So I’m explaining the difference between vaginal moisturizer and lubricant once and for all. Thankfully, it’s pretty simple.
What’s the difference between vaginal moisturizer and lubricant?
I use both of these tools to treat my own symptoms. Moisturizers are hydrating, and just like the ones you use on your face, they’re meant to be used daily if you need them. The key ingredient of a good one should be hyaluronic acid.
Lubricants are meant to decrease friction. They are to be used when you have increased friction in the area, i.e., sex. While this product isn’t meant to be used on any consistent schedule, I think a woman should use a lubricant with every intimate encounter. A good lubricant should be oil- or silicone-based.
