U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told NBC's Meet the Press that President Trump was allowing space for negotiations with Iran to evolve during the weekend's break in hostilities. "Talks are ongoing. They’re happening at every level," he said. Speaking to Fox News, Waltz added that diplomatic efforts have ramped up “particularly in the past few days.” Meanwhile, it appears the battlefield in the Middle East is increasingly intersecting with the war between Ukraine and Russia. Iran threatened Kyiv after a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, a key trade route with Russia. "Any attack on Iran always comes with a cost," the head of the Iranian parliament’s national security, Ebrahim Azizi, wrote on X. “Iran does not let actions go unanswered.”
Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy called out the Trump administration for changing the CDC guidance on vaccines to say it's "not an evidence-based claim" that shots don't cause autism. "That is what gives some parents hesitancy regarding having their children vaccinated," Cassidy, who is a medical doctor, told CNN's Dana Bash on Sunday evening. He added that the change from the previous advice, which was a firm assurance that vaccines don't cause autism, will make parents doubt whether to do "the right thing, which is to have their child vaccinated." Cassidy's remarks come as the Senate's health committee considers whether to advance the nomination of Trump's pick to lead the CDC, Dr. Erica Schwartz. Cassidy appeared reassured after a conversation with Schwartz last week, but told Bash last night he wasn't sure Schwartz would have the authority to remove the problematic language on vaccines. He stressed that he was talking to HHS about it, and that decades of research have proven that vaccines don't cause autism. He called the CDC's messaging "almost an insult to the American people."
The Trump administration is reviewing its process for vetting ICE officers following the deadly shooting of Colombian immigrant Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine earlier this month. A report by the Washington Post suggested that the officer involved had a history of violence. DHS has not publicly confirmed the agent's identity, but Ashley Brouillette told the Post that her ex-husband, David Brouillette, had confessed to her that he was the killer. She said he was prone to fits of rage, including pouring boiling water on her when she was holding their daughter. “If this person had that type of history, it would have been a vetting issue, and it should have been brought to the attention of those” who make those calls, White House border czar Tom Homan told CNN.
Two people were killed at the scene and at least four more, including a two-year-old child, were taken to the hospital with injuries after a shooting at a Seattle food festival on Sunday evening. A fifth person later showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound. One of the people transported to the hospital later died. Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said a suspect is in custody, and authorities are searching for another person. He said the police don't have a description of the second suspect, adding: "We’re still trying to figure this out." It's unclear whether any of the wounded were involved in the shooting. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have now been at least 271 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year.
