With the many deals going on from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, the season of giving can start to feel more like the season of shopping. Looking to counter the consumerism that seemed to be overtaking the holiday season, New York City’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation started Giving Tuesday in 2012 as a way to shift the focus back to the spirit of generosity and community.

The creators allowed brands and nonprofits to use resources like the Giving Tuesday logo and hashtag freely in an effort to bring as much awareness to the movement as possible, and it worked: The campaign generated millions of dollars in donations in its first year and has continued to grow in the 10 years since.

Giving Tuesday encourages people to do good in their communities, whether that’s donating time or treasure to local and global organizations, or performing acts of kindness like paying for someone’s groceries.

Ready to give back but not sure where to direct your donation? For inspiration, refer to Giving Tuesday’s map of communities and coalitions to get involved in or this list of some of Katie’s favorite local charities.

If you’re still in the shopping mood or have people you need to get gifts for, there are a bunch of brands that give back to organizations on Giving Tuesday and year-round. We found nine that sell everything from ethically produced coffee that also gives back to bracelets that support cancer research.

KEEN

KEEN

You may know KEEN for its reliable and comfortable hiking shoes, but the brand also creates comfy slides and slippers for those who prefer the great indoors. This year, they’ve created a limited-edition Ukraine Shanti Slide to benefit the Everyday Refugees Foundation, an organization that aims to help those displaced by war, natural disaster, discrimination, or poverty. All profits from the Shanti Slide will go to Everyday Refugees Foundation to help Ukrainian families in Romania who have been forced to flee their homes.

Line in the Sand

Line in the Sand

We talk a lot about Line in the Sand, and for good reason: Katie loves the comfortably chic, sun-protective swimwear that doubles as activewear, and the company has an incredible mission too. Founder Lynne O’Brien started LITS after being diagnosed with leukemia eight years ago and struggling to find swimwear that truly protected her from the sun. Line in the Sand’s swimwear is all made right in New York City using 100 percent recycled nylon fabric, and 100 percent of their profits go to organizations that fight cancer and protect the oceans year-round. Katie spends a lot of time in the cozy Afternoon Zip Hoodie, which is made of an eco-friendly blend of cotton and recycled beechwood MicroModal.

Equator Coffees

Equator Coffees

Business and life partners Helen Russell and Brooke O’Donnell co-founded Equator Coffees in 1995 with a laser focus on prioritizing quality and the “Chain of Well-Being”, from farm to cup. In the 25 years since, Equator has become Fair Trade Certified and a Certified B Corporation, founded its own ethical coffee farm, began using energy-efficient roasters, and rolled out blends that support a range of charities. Equator donates $3 from every World Bicycle Relief Blend sold to the namesake organization, which distributes high quality bicycles to rural and remote communities to help children get to school, doctors get to patients, adults get to work, and more.

Ten Little

Ten Little

New moms and colleagues Fatma Collins and Julie Rogers founded Ten Little to revolutionize the process of buying children’s shoes from the ground up. They created physician-backed shoes that encourage proper foot growth and a comprehensive fit guide to help parents determine the exact right size for their little one. And since kids can sometimes grow out of shoes too quickly to get the full life out of them, Ten Little has partnered with Soles4Souls to repurpose gently used shoes, keep them out of the landfill, and support impoverished communities along the way.

Welly

Welly

Fact: 785 million people around the world live without clean water, which means, beyond the obvious health consequences, adults and kids have to spend hours every day gathering water, keeping them out of work and school. Ben Kander aims to address this lack of access with Welly, which donates 1 percent of each sale to initiatives bringing clean water to communities in need. Welly has brought clean water sources to more than 1,000 people since its founding, and is now in the process of funding its fourth project. We’re loving Welly’s Camp Cup, which will keep your afternoon tea warm for up to six hours.
