Weekend Whats: Queer Eye‘s Tan France

Tan France

The Queer Eye star shared some ideas for this weekend, including the TikTok fashion trends to avoid.

You may recognize Tan France as the Queer Eye’s beloved style expert but he’s also become a pop culture phenomenon. Since joining the show in 2018, he has written a memoir, Naturally Tan, teamed up with Alexa Chung for Netflix’s Next in Fashion, and launched a new podcast on Audible called Queer Icons. On top of that, he’s a spokesperson for a brand-new initiative called “The Now Me,” which looks to empower people living with the hereditary skin condition known as eczema. He stopped by to share his weekend plans, including a delicious recipe and some summer-ready outfit ideas.

What I’m Watching: The Crown — I’m obsessed! And then The Undoing on HBO Max.

What I’m Cooking: Indian food always. I’ve got a recipe for dal, which is a really easy dish you make with beans or lentils. I love Indian food. If you don’t like Indian food, try this and you’re gonna love it. This recipe is so easy to make, and really, really cheap.

What I’m Wearing: I’m gonna start with this one: a white T-shirt — it’s an important part of “The Now Me” campaign. For so many with eczema, a white tee has not been an option. I’m hoping that they’ll feel the most confident they possibly can in their white tee, so this campaign aims to help people understand how it’s possible.

Next, a great piece of outerwear. Even in the summer, embrace light outerwear: It’s a great way to layer and add a little more pop to your outfit.

A heeled boot — I’m obsessed in any climate, for a man or woman or non-binary person. Just a slight heel will give that lift and a bit more confidence.

Find a great pair of jeans. Don’t listen to what the kids are saying: You don’t need to let the slim jeans go just because we’re in the land of TikTok now. Go for whatever suits you, but remember that a wider cut is going to make you look shorter than you might care for, so choose wisely. I love a wide leg, but in moderation.

And then, if you’re somebody who embraces dresses, go for a white summer dress. It feels comfy. It feels amazing. It feels breezy. Go for a maxi, or go for short, I don’t care. As long as it’s a white summer dress — because it’s gonna make you feel gorgeous.

Ignore Crocs and jelly shoes. Believe me, I know the TikTokers are all about them, but you’re going to regret wearing them, I promise.

What I’m Listening To: I’m obsessed with Billie Eilish, of course. Her new song “NDA” is wicked — I love everything that she and her brother Finneas do together.

And also, there’s a girl group from Korea called Blackpink, and I’ve never been more obsessed with a band in my life. I used to hear teenage girls get excited about bands and think, “I’ll never understand why you were obsessed with these people.” Now, at the age of 38, I get it. Blackpink is mind-blowing and I love them and I want to be best friends with them. I wish they would just answer my DMs.

What I’m Reading: The book is called Mirage and it’s by an author named Soheir Khashoggi. It’s from 1997, but they just re-released it. And in my opinion, it is the best book. It’s about a woman in a Saudi family who escapes her shocking marriage and moves to Toronto. I’ve loved it since I was 13 years old and I’ve read it at least 20 times. It’s literally on my nightstand right now.
