Man’s exploration of outer space is one of the greatest achievements of the 20thcentury. But “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” could never have happened if it weren’t for the women on the ground at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The new film “Hidden Figures” tells the stories of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, who worked as “human computers” for NASA, and helped put John Glenn into orbit and Neil Armstrong on the moon. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, the stars of “Hidden Figures,” stopped by Yahoo News to discuss the film and true story behind it.

Alan Gross, an American contractor held captive by the Fidel Castro regime for five years, was released in 2014 when President Obama reopened diplomatic relations with Cuba. Gross stopped by Yahoo News to talk about the death of the former Cuban leader and said Castro’s legacy is “brutality.” He also compared President-elect Donald Trump to Castro, saying, “He’s off his rocker. He’s a megalomaniac of the same ilk as Fidel Castro, only he’s not as well read.”

Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Vice President Aaron Burr in “Hamilton,” joined me on Yahoo News to talk about the statement he read to Vice President-elect Mike Pence after a performance of “Hamilton” and the reaction it received around the country. The actor said, “I think there’s really no way to take the words we said as controversial. That’s democracy.” Dixon also performed his original song, “We Are.”

I was joined by Richard Cohen, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center, to talk about Donald Trump selecting Steve Bannon as White House chief strategist and the rise of the alt-right movement.

I sat down with onetime presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson, former Clinton administration senior adviser Richard Socarides, and ex-Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour about the election results and the upcoming Trump presidency.
