How Olivia Newton-John Scored The “Sandy” Role

We probably wouldn’t recognize the name Olivia Newton-John today if it wasn’t for her 1978 breakthrough role as Sandy in the film-adaptation of “Grease.” At the time of the audition, she was a 29-year-old rookie with an Aussie accent who had recently been in a film that had bombed. Olivia Newton-John was hesitant to take the risk of playing the all-American teen role of Sandy, that is until she met the then up-and-coming stud, John Travolta.
